Katherine Anteney and Sarah Mander

Two of the citys most active printmakers, Sarah Mander and Katherine Anteney present works that take the culture and fabric of Southampton as their inspiration.

The pair are perhaps best known locally as the founders of Red Hot Press, yet this exhibition allows them to develop and extend the boundaries of their own work. Whilst Mander explores a personal journey through Southampton, discovering unexpected nooks and corners as she works, Anteney explores familiar representations of the city through the media and childrens books. SO is the first exhibition of prints to be held at Bargate Monument Gallery and we are delighted to be working with two excellent local printmakers on this project.

The Arches Artists

A spectacle of Opposites and Contrasts!

The Arches Studios has been run by a-space for over 2 years providing studio spaces for up to 26 artists, creators and makers in the centre of Southampton. This is the second show at Bargate Monument Gallery by arches artists, following on from our 2006 exhibition, Prophecy.

Designed and directed by the latest intake of artists into the studios Same=Different celebrates the work of this diverse group by exploring the idea of opposites and the possibilities for dynamic contrasts and juxtapositions that this concept provides.

The Oceanography Project

The Oceanography Project is an exhibition of culminating artworks from a series of collaborations between scientists from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton and artists from Artel.

Artel is a diverse group of artists, ranging from painters to conceptual artists, based in Chichester. The show promises to be a diverse mix of ideas and experiences.

Open-entry exhibition exploring what it means to be human in todays world.

Creativity is one of the defining characteristics of humanity. That creativity has developed the world around us, from the way we travel and communicate to the houses we live in and the processes that manufacture our food - we now live in a world where the cutting edge has become everyday. But in this technological society, created by man, what remains of ‘The Human’.

The artists selected for this exhibition will present a variety of different responses to the challenge of this theme.

Charlotte White

White’s rhythmic sound installation presents statistics as you have never heard them before. Issuing from eight speakers a cacophony of voices reads out from over 100 randomly associated facts. Ranging from the poignant to the totally mundane, the facts are read each in accordance with their frequency creating a continuous, yet constantly changing rhythm.

Twonotten Digital Arts Festival

This exhibition showcases the work of emerging artists whom in some way use technology as a medium to communicate through or involve technologies in their studio practice. The show will highlight the growing number of contemporary artists using digital technology and will offer them the opportunity of exhibiting alongside their peers, whilst also demonstrating to the public how technology can inform and influence the visual arts.

The Arches Artists

The first group show by Arches artists is to be staged over two venues, the bargate monument gallery and the newly converted Arch 07. The show features work by all resident artists and showcases the talent that resides here in Southampton.

The artist can be seen as a predictive medium, using information from visual and theoretic sources to refine and predict possible futures.

Is tomorrow a place that holds great fear or excitement for mankind? Should we be apprehensive about what is around the corner? Should we run and hide, or dance and celebrate that we have survived for this long? Is the future in the hands of humans, or is it just too late for us to repent?

Sarah Misselbrook

Misselbrook’s work is concerned with the female form, specifically her own, and the connotations it conjures and has forced upon it in todays society.

Through this, her largest solo show to date we have offered her the opening exhibition at the bargate monument gallery. Misselbrook is a tremendous talent and we are very excited to be working with her and aiding the development of her career in its early stages, we have high hopes that Misselbrook will be a big name for the future.
